Internet Branding - How to Harness the Power of the Net

Internet branding is as important as any other marketing tool used to establish a reputation. Webmasters contribute to the success of well-designed websites by adding that technical element that shapes the users experience. Webmasters add that visual impact needed to draw and retain visitors. If a website is designed well, visitors return. If visitors return, it’s likely that they will tell others about the site. Pretty soon, the site will be promoted as the number one site for that particular service.  Improving Internet branding can be obtained by consistent advertising. Internet branding can be an affordable tool that strengthens the corporate identity. The online reputation of a company is crucial nowadays.

With the multitude of layoffs and corporate failings, companies are seeking to push affordable branding methods to regain the public’s trust. Typically, Internet branding can be quite costly. Although the payoff is attractive, it can pinch corporate budgets. There are several companies who offer consultations on Internet branding with affordable branding as an option. In today’s economic climate, affordable branding ought to be a necessity!

Affordable branding and corporate identity are two crucial elements that new businesses seek. These affordable branding packages that websites and companies offer include web design and development, hosting and some programming. If affordable branding is what you seek, make sure the value is high. Affordable branding includes items like a toll-free telephone number or printed merchandise with your corporate brand.  Other affordable branding products include notepads, mouse pads, lip balm, or laptop accessories.

Selecting a Domain

A prime example of effective Internet branding is Google’s website. Google would be called something like thebestsearchengine.com if it were not for its Internet branding. Google created a simple, seemingly affordable (no Flash or superfluous web design tricks) brand via the Internet. The success of the site took place the first time the visitor used the site. The ease of use and optimum search results made Google retain customers. That is the goal of Internet branding.

Choosing a great domain name is a vital decision in starting your Internet presence and establishing your brand. Domain names are a great example of affordable branding. You have the choice of up to 67 characters, although that is not advisable! There are several websites to choose from that allow you to find out  if a domain name has already been registered, or offer you options if the commercial extension is taken. In Internet branding, the domain name should be clever, easy to remember and say something about your website’s content.  The other factor is that with an easy to remember domain name, visitors can come directly to your website instead of going through a search engine.

A webmaster has the technical expertise to select a web package that best suits the company’s needs. Affordable branding options are available in terms of hosting, ftping files and overall technical configuration. It’s just a matter of research and keeping in mind the corporate brand.

Designing for Internet Branding

In order for a company to start its Internet branding campaign, a design team needs establish the company’s virtual ‘voice’.  That ‘voice’ in Internet branding equals the uniform corporate theme, colors, print media, logo, etc. This aspect of Internet branding would not necessarily be lumped into affordable branding. In bigger, more established companies, much of the corporate design budget is allocated to web design. Affordable branding can be accomplished though! Expanding aspects of a website or maintaining its growth can be achieved at a lowest cost. Regardless of the affordable branding tips that you find or hear about, the goal of Internet branding is to manage the company’s reputation.

From my own experience, I have witnessed the growth of the corporate branding in universities and health systems. In recent years, webmasters, web developers and web designers have started developing branding initiatives and guides. The branding guides are like the communications plan for a corporate public affairs department. The guides outline the corporate image, target audience, goals, strategies and meticulously define the Internet branding. Establishing Internet branding guidelines sets the standard for how a company wants to look and feel online. A branding guideline describing, in detail, how the logo or corporate brand needs to appear every time. For example, ABC Corporation shall have a twenty pixel tall image with a filled outline and a drop shadow, font 16, Lucinda Handwriting. A brand guide should provide examples, colors, text face and size. Logos even have a set of standards that need to be established. Logos can be standalone with no text, text plus symbol, text with slogan or a fusion of any of them.

Internet branding manages the appearance of the corporate image and defines the graphic relationship through color, typography and format.  Uniformity is important to the image of your a corporate brand. For example, the International Color Consortium (ICC) is the benchmark for universal color management. The ICC was founded by recognizable companies like Apple, Kodak and Adobe.  As of late, those particular companies have set the standard for web design on an international level. The ICC is the organization that identifies colors that ultimately affects everything in society like fashion, the printing industry and logos.

When companies’ Internet branding or printing materials have color assigned to them, these color formulas have standards and specific color numbers. When a company requests an order from a vendor, these color standards would be used. In the printing industry, the Pantone Matching System is used to visually match color samples and assigned a number. Webmasters should be cognizant of this detail and make sure all of the images are uniform.

Summary

So now you have a domain name, a web host and have formed an Internet brand. To improve brand exposure, think advertising and promotion. There are a variety of affordable branding tools and online business improvement methods.  The amount of money saved using affordable branding solutions can be used in other areas that improve the overall brand image of the company and maintain an Internet presence. Designers and programmers are still on the payroll and some smaller companies are having a challenging time finding affordable branding. Affordable branding can be obtained through a variety of sources. Establishing an Internet branding identity and style doesn’t have to break the bank. Small companies have been having a harder time competing with the more successful websites. The larger companies can afford the costs associated with creating an Internet brand and have the resources to pay their design staff. Overall, regardless of the method, there is a way to establish an Internet ‘voice’ with affordable branding tools.

The old method of advertising is interactive marketing. The term is misleading. Most people think it means that there is some type of interaction on the part of the person advertised to, and there is. But, it is not conversational. Instead, the advertiser wants you to interact with their campaign in a specific set of steps. Following the call to action and visiting a website for instance. It’s the push to make you do something. Live this image. Buy this now.

Social Media Marketing is just the opposite. It’s the pull of the tribe. The tribe already has your trust so the actions they take are ones you align with. On a larger scale, it’s the allure of belonging in the group as you take action together. “I am doing this so why don’t you do it with me?” On an individual level, the attraction is to behave the same way to get the same results that benefits your fellow tribeswoman or tribesman. “She looks hot! I want to look hot too. I want to go to her hairstylist” and you do. Social Media Marketing uses the power of attraction.

While advertising tries to use the same tactic, with a billboard for instance, of a gorgeous woman telling you the benefits of the salon, it doesn’t have the same impact because it’s pushing you to go. It is not pulling you in as a trusted friend. Your friends have your best interests at heart and advertisers do not. Social Media Marketing is based on building trust and that foundation will make Social Media a dominant player in Marketing.
