How to Make Your Brand Stand Out

Posted by Admin | Branding Ideas | Friday 17 October 2008 10:48 pm

The importance of branding should hardly come as any surprise.  Brands and logos are some of the most resonant images in the minds of consumers today. This is splendid if you, like McDonald’s or Coca-Cola, already have well established brands that practically serve as their own advertising.  But how does a startup company establish and create its own brand?  Here are a few important strategies for developing your brand.

Establish your brand’s dominance in your niche

Initially you must determine what your niche is.  This is extremely important; you don’t want to be one of the many businesses in your niche, you want to be the only (or best) one.  So look for areas where there is a relative vacuum, and launch your startup’s brand there.  In some cases, it may be best to define your brand geographically.  If you can target your startup to a particular region or community, not only can it help define your niche but it can also help establish the dominance of your brand in the minds of your target audience.

Keep your brand consistent

Think about it this way:  if you walk into an upscale restaurant, are politely ushered to a table with a white tablecloth, sip your wine and then, when the food arrives, you find that the plates are caked with the remnants of previous meals, how do you feel?  Are you likely to go back?  Make sure that every aspect of your startup reflects the brand and the experience that you are trying to create.  This is important for every aspect of your startup—even the domain name you choose.  Picking a name that clearly identifies what your brand stands for makes it more recognizable for your customers—and may even help your startup show up on search engines.

Make your brand stand out—and quality is the best salesman

Your brand tells your story, so make it an interesting one.  If your startup is selling electronics equipment, a good story would be “I was having such a hard time finding specialized equipment at decent prices, I grew tired of scanning endlessly through the websites of chains and decided to start my own store.”

If you are developing a startup that helps professionals in medical technology connect, your brand could be based on a story such as: “As I was developing my own technology, I realized I had no idea how to find qualified professionals that could help me with all the steps to bring my ideas to market.”

These types of stories for your brand will help your target audience identify with your startup.  Also, remember that for all the work you put into your mission statement and establishing your brand, your brand is only as strong as your target audience’s experience.  Nothing helps your brand like designing a website that is easy to use, intuitive, and responsive to your customer’s needs.

Creating a startup is a daunting task, and it can be difficult to establish your brand in a way that makes it stand out from the rest, but with these strategies and a few more, you’re on the right path.

Hang in there iCalvyn - often a sincere desire to possess a brand is the catalysis that drives one to come to fruition.
